Unison requests 3% pay rise for private NHS contractors

As we are all aware the Government has given a 3% pay rise for most NHS workers operating within the UK. However, Unison believes that workers such as porters, catering assistants, cleaners and other NHS healthcare staff who are employed by private companies should receive the same rise.

Unison is calling all private firms and subsidiary companies owned by various NHS trusts to increase the hourly pay rates to at least match NHS rates. What’s more Unison has written to the largest private employers who operate across the health service advising them that their staff too have all worked extremely hard during this challenging Covid pandemic.

General secretary Christina McAnea said: “NHS staff have the benefit of a national pay system, but those not directly employed are missing out, often because of complex contracting arrangements, penny-pinching practices and the hard-nosed pursuit of profit.” “Staff in the NHS work on one site as one team, from maintaining clean and safe wards to ensuring patients are fed and cared for. No-one delivering NHS services should be paid less than their directly-employed colleagues.”
